The strength of the Icelandic geothermal cluster involves i.a. how it has used research methods and applied them to achieve success. Concerning education, there is a significant supply of vocational and university study programs in Iceland that benefit the field of geothermal and other green energy. Enclosed list includes the eductational institutions who are participating in our colloboration:
Keilir consists of four different schools: Aviation Academy, Health Academy, Institute of Technology and a Preliminary Studies Department where the main objective is to prepare students, who have a vocational training and/or sufficient practical experience in industry, with the knowledge and competency necessary for further studies at university level.
The purpose of Keilir is to create and disseminate knowledge in an active partnership with domestic and international schools, companies and other economic partners. Major stakeholders in Keilir are the University of Iceland, Islandsbanki, Icelandair Group, HS Geothermal Power, Reykjavik Energy, Icelandic GeoSurvey and others.
The Geothermal Training Programme of the United Nations University (UNU-GTP) is a postgraduate training programme, aiming at assisting developing countries in capacity building within geothermal exploration and development. The programme consists of six months annual training for practicing professionals from developing and transitional countries with significant geothermal potential. Priority is given to countries where geothermal development is under way, in order to maximize technology transfer.
The programme has operated in Iceland since 1979. It is a cooperation between the United Nations University and the Government of Iceland and is hosted by the National Energy Authority (Orkustofnun).
The University of Akureyri (Háskólinn á Akureyri) is located in North Iceland and has served Akureyri and its rural surrounding since 1987. The University has built a reputation for academic excellence and good industrial relations. Located in the capital of North Iceland, Akureyri, the University has been instrumental in the economic growth of the region and is central in the planning for a future as a knowledge based society.
The University of Iceland aims to be one of the world’s leading universities and apply approved standards to all quality assurance of its operations. The university holds itself and its lecturers, management and other staff to high standards. High demands are also made of students; this ensures that a degree from the University of Iceland is considered to be of high quality and is trusted all over the world.
In 2006, the University of Iceland set itself the ambitious long-term goal to become one of the 100 leading universities in the world. In order to achieve that goal, the university intends to focus on outstanding research, teaching and support services. The university now works purposefully towards implementing this strategy, and has already enjoyed great success. The university applies rigorous internal quality assurance measures to all its operations. External assessment regularly shows that the university is fully in line with international standards.
A strong focus
Reykjavik University's (RU) subjects in research and teaching are science and engineering, computer science, business and law. The University has an interdisciplinary approach that fits well with today's society and offers programmes that, for example, cross business with computer science and computer science with engineering. RU is at the forefront of research in Iceland in its focus areas.
Our way of teaching
RU emphasises hands-on learning that prepares students for the challenges they will meet after graduation. This means working with other students completing actual, authentic assignments, often in collaboration with companies and institutions. This is one way in which students benefit from RU's extensive connection to the industry. Classes are small and interaction between students and teachers is encouraged.
Small equals good
The number of students at RU is approximately 3500 and all teaching takes place under one roof, creating a friendly sense of community. International students at RU have mentioned the friendly atmosphere as one of the University's great advantages. Our campus is easily accessible from the centre of the city.
In a world daily facing the growing and often contradictory challenges of increased energy demands, declining reserves of fossil fuels, and an urgent need to address the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions, there is a clear case for far sighted training and education.

Iceland School of Energy is part of and accredited by the School of Science and Engineering at Reykjavik University in Iceland.
Þekkingarnet Þingeyinga or Húsavík Academic Center (HAC) is dedicated to promoting and facilitating lifelong learning, university studies and interdisciplinary research. The center is located in the town of Húsavík, Iceland, but serves all of Þingeyjarsýslur, a region in the northeastern part of Iceland (see the shaded area on the map on right).

What we do
HAC offers academic, vocational and recreational courses and study programmes to people in the community in collaboration with universities and regional parties of interest, such as municipalities, labor organizations and the business community.
HAC also provides study facilities for students who live in the region and attend university or other schools at upper educational levels.
HAC serves as a center for interdisciplinary research in Þingeyjarsýslur and offers its services and facilities to researchers working in the region, whether they are independent or affiliated with institutions or universities. View our mission statement.
The facilities of HAC in Húsavík include a study room, full internet access, printing, faxing, copying and wire binding as well as a class/conference room equipped with video conferencing, a projector and other class room equipment. The facilities also include access to a bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen and dinng area.
